Kurti Size Chart & Care Guide

Every Misaaya kurti is cut to the same size chart, so once you know your size you can order across the whole catalogue with confidence. Measurements are body measurements, in inches.

Between sizes? Size up. A kurti is cut with ease, so slightly loose drapes correctly while slightly tight pulls across the bust and armhole.

How to measure

Wrap a soft measuring tape around the fullest part of your bust, the narrowest part of your waist, and the fullest part of your hips, keeping the tape parallel to the floor.

  • Bust — around the fullest part, with the tape level and not pulled tight.
  • Waist — the narrowest part of your torso, usually just above the navel.
  • Hip — around the fullest part, roughly 8 inches below the waist.

The easiest method is not to measure yourself at all: take a kurti you already own and like the fit of, lay it flat, measure across the chest just under the armholes, and double it. Match that against the bust column.

Caring for your kurti

Everyday cotton, mul and mulmul

Machine washable on a cold, gentle cycle. Wash dark colours separately for the first two or three washes, dry in shade to protect the dye, and iron while slightly damp for the crispest finish. See the full everyday cotton kurti edit.

Hand block print, dabu and Kalamkari

Natural dyes release a little excess colour at first. Wash separately in cold water for the first two washes, add a spoon of salt to help set the dye, and always dry in shade — direct sun is what fades a hand-printed indigo. Browse the hand block print edit.

Chikankari, mirror work and other embroidery

Hand wash cold with a mild detergent, or dry clean. Do not wring: press the water out flat in a towel. Iron on the reverse and store folded, so the weight of the thread work does not distort the shoulders. Browse the festive chikankari and Anarkali edit.

Common questions

What size kurti should I buy if I am between two sizes?
Size up. Kurtis are cut with ease rather than to the body, and a size that is fractionally loose drapes correctly, whereas one that is fractionally tight pulls across the bust and the armhole. If your bust and hip measurements fall in different rows, choose the size that matches your bust — that is the measurement a kurti is fitted from.
How do I wash a cotton kurti so it does not shrink or fade?
Wash cold, on a gentle cycle or by hand, and separately for the first two or three washes so any excess dye does not transfer. Dry in shade rather than direct sun, which is what fades natural dyes. Iron while very slightly damp, on the reverse for anything printed or embroidered. Our cotton is pre-shrunk, so cold washing keeps movement to 1-2% at most.
How should I care for a chikankari or mirror-work kurti?
Hand wash in cold water with a mild detergent, or dry clean. Never wring embroidered fabric — press the water out flat inside a towel. Dry in shade, and iron on the reverse so the thread work is not crushed. Store folded rather than on a hanger, so the weight of the embroidery does not pull the shoulders out of shape.
Are the measurements body measurements or garment measurements?
The chart below lists body measurements. The finished garment is cut larger than these to allow for movement, so measure yourself (or a kurti that already fits you well) against these numbers rather than measuring the garment.
